Mrs. Hicks:
Thank you so much for visiting our web site and taking the time to learn more about us! This is my ninth year teaching, and I feel so privileged to have such a rewarding job. My first two years of teaching were spent as a reading specialist at Overdale. I taught Reading Recovery to first graders and taught small group reading lessons to kindergarten through fifth grade students. I especially love teaching children to read and seeing their excitement when they reach their reading goals, and I can't wait to work with this group of students this year to do just that!
I graduated from the University of Louisville in 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in elementary education with a concentration in teaching students with learning or behavior disabilities. In 2014, I earned my Master's Degree in teaching reading and writing from the University of the Cumberlands.
I am so looking forward to getting to know my students and their families this year, and I'd love to share with you about my family, too. I married my high school sweetheart, Thomas, in June of 2012. We have a three-year-old son named "Connor", and our daughter, "Leah", is one-year-old. I love being a mommy, and I am enjoying this special time in our lives as we watch our babies grow (much too quickly!!). We also have two dogs, Cubby and Scout, who are our other two "babies".
Thanks again for getting to know a little about me! I'm happy to help should you ever have a question or concern, so please feel free to email me any time!
Ms. Kerns:
Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Karen Kerns, and this is my 14th year at Overdale. I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mom when my children were little, and went back to school when my youngest was in first grade. I graduated from Idaho State University in 1995 with a BA in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and a minor in Music. I have a Master’s in Teaching and Learning from Nova Southeastern University and am a National Board Certified teacher. I've taught either K or First grade for the last 13 years- before that I taught High School and Middle School Band and Elementary General Music. I love kids! I have four grown children and eight grandchildren, who are scattered across the US. I live across the river in Jeffersonville, next door to my son Jake and his family. I have two seriously spoiled basset hounds. In my spare time I love to garden, scrapbook, play my flute, and cook. I’m looking forward to getting to know you and your child this year. I consider it an honor to be entrusted to teach your child, and I am truly blessed to have a job that I love to come to each and every day.
